Powerful/ Significant Leaders By Abigail Hinthorne During the Renaissance Era there were many powerful and significant leaders of Spain. Each contributed to making Spain a powerful country. Queen Isabella I ruled from 1474-1504. She was a Spanish Queen who, with her husband Ferdinand, ruled the First United Spanish Kingdom. The Moors, North African Muslims who had controlled Southern Spain since the 700s, were driven out of Spain in 1492. They also sponsored Columbus’s voyages such as sailing west across the Atlantic to get to Asia. Queen Isabella was born on April 22, 1415 and died November 26, 1504. King Ferdinand ruled from January 20, 1479 to January 23, 1516. He was the son of John II of Aragon whose family was a cadet branch of the House of Trastamara. Ferdinand and Isabella had five children: Isabella, Juan, Juana, Maria, and Catherine. Isabella was born on October 2, 1498. Juan was born on June 28, 1478. Juana was born on November 6, 1479 and died on April 6, 1555. Maria was born on June 29, 1482 and died on March 7, 1517. Catherine was born on December 16, 1485 and died on January 7, 1536. Philip II was the king of Spain. He was the Lord of the Seventeen Provinces from 1556 until 1581, holding various titles for individual territories, such as Duke or Count. Phillip II was directing explorations all around the world and settling the colonization of territories in all of the known continents. Phillip II was born on May 21, 1527 and died in September 1598. Charles V ruled from February 24, 1550 to September 21, 1558. He was the son of Phillip I and Joanna of Castile and grandson of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. Charles’s mother was herd to be insane! Charles V married Isabella, sister of John III of Portugal. Many rulers of Spain were powerful and significant.
